EU Extends Civilian Missions in Palestinian Territories
The EU Council announced the renewal of the EU Border Assistance Mission for the Rafah Crossing Point (EUBAM Rafah) and the EU Police Mission for the Palestinian Territories (EUPOL COPPS).
The decision came after EU leaders reaffirmed in June their commitment to international law and to achieving a “comprehensive, just and lasting peace” based on the two-state solution, according to the Council.
The bloc also reaffirmed its willingness to support the implementation of a comprehensive peace plan for Gaza, including through the two missions.
The extension followed a strategic assessment by the European External Action Service that was endorsed by the EU’s Political and Security Committee. It was also based on requests submitted by the Palestinian Authority and Israel, according to the statement.
EUBAM Rafah, established in 2005, works to support the development of effective and sustainable border management at the Rafah crossing.
EUPOL COPPS, launched in 2006, supports Palestinian efforts to strengthen policing and criminal justice institutions.
