EU lawmaker warns dependence on US payment systems poses major risks
Aurore Lalucq voiced concern over what she described as the absence of digital and payment system issues from discussions on European economic strategy. She remarked: "But that is where our fragility lies today. Almost all of our payment systems today are American."
Lalucq cautioned that the United States, under President Donald Trump, could sever Europe’s access to these systems at short notice. "Donald Trump can cut them off overnight. He has already done so," she said, referencing previous actions affecting the International Criminal Court and other rule-of-law mechanisms.
Calling for swift measures, Lalucq said she had submitted a “very specific request” to the European Commission to organize a meeting soon to develop a European alternative, which she likened to an “Airbus of payment systems.” She emphasized that such an initiative would be low-cost while offering substantial benefits.
"We can't say we weren't warned," Lalucq said, noting that distributors, retailers, and judges share her concerns. She concluded by stressing the stakes: "It costs nothing, it saves our economy, it saves our democracy."
